LAWN EXTRACTION is a chunk of grass that was extracted from my yard in Pittsburgh and relocated to Long Island City, coincidentally where my mother grew up. Despite its personal journey, this piece of turf stands in for lawns in general—the pervasive floor of the American landscape, sanitized with fertilizers, genetically fortified and under constant threat of weedy invasion. A postcard souvenir of this backyard Land Art was free to visitors, the hole left behind. 2 x 4 feet turf; 4.25x6 inches postcard. Installed at Flux Factory and then replanted at Socrates Sculpture Park.
